Square Enix has announced that the famous action-RPG Nier: Automata is getting a television anime adaptation. This was revealed during the game's 5th Anniversary commemorative livestream event.
A short trailer for the series was also released, showing the concept art of protagonist 2B and her Pod companion. The video teaser also flashes texts like: "Everything that lives is designed to end" and "We're perpetually trapped in an everlasting spiral of life and death."
Nier Automata's anime series will be produced by Square Enix and Aniplex, the studio behind Fullmetal Alchemist, Demon Slayer, Sword Art Online, and The Promised Neverland.
Based on the description available on the official website (nierautomata-anime.com), the basic plot of the anime is the same as the game. The anime is set in the distant future, where humankind has been driven from the Earth by the overwhelming force of Machine Life Forms unleashed by an invading alien race. After seeking sanctuary on the moon, humanity launches a war to reclaim the planet with its own legions of androids. Yorha No. 2 Type B, 2B, is a Yorha combat android that fights to reclaim Earth.
Other details remain lacking at the moment, and there's no release date yet for the anime adaptation.
Nier: Automata, developed by Platinum Games, and published by Square Enix, was released in 2017 for PlayStation 4 and PC platforms and then rolled out in Xbox One in 2018. It takes place in the "Nier" universe, a spin-off of the "Drakengard" franchise. The game features open-world environments, several playable characters which are unlocked as you progress through the game, both melee and ranged weapons, and intense action.
Meanwhile, the original Nier game, developed by now-defunct game developer Cavia, was released in 2010. Square Enix released a remastered version of the game, Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139..., for PS4, Xbox One, and Windows. A mobile spin-off, Nier Reincarnation, is also launched in 2021 for Android and iOS.
